VDSL Funtimes
« on: January 21, 2014, 07:25:45 PM »
So anyone who knows me well would've known about my VDSL woes.
So this new modem seems much more stable (for the 10 minutes I've used it so far), but I'm getting about 5Mbps less out of the sync rate.
And you know what, if this gives me a stable connection, I'd gladly trade that speed.

Long live 24/7 internets.

Did you get a different brand or just a replacement router?

Apparently the difference in sync rates between different routers for VDSL is much bigger than for regular DSL.

Yeah, it's the same model, but just replaced the modem.
They didn't change my profile or band.

Which ISP are you with? I recently upgraded to VDSL through Vodafone and apart from the call centre staff either not correctly processing my request or their departments not communicating well with each other (both things I'm familiar with working for an ISP myself) it's been pretty good. I have stabilized at 41down and 10 up with 10db downstream attenuation.

I can walk down my street 150 metres and touch the cabinet however so I was expecting something along these lines. That's a pretty large fluctuation for a 1:1 replacement, but yeah I'm with you speed can go fly itself off a cliff if it comes at the cost of stability. Cause really how fast do you NEED those torrents going? :P

I'm with Slingshot atm. I'm on the Unlimited Plus plan.
I sync at about 50/11 and the actual rates are about 40/10.
Things are definitely better since buying my own modem. The one Slingshot provided me with was just pure rubbish. I went through 3 of them, and then they admitted that there was a problem with the device and that they were trying to fix it with a firmware update that may or may not be coming in the near future.

I used to work for an ISP as well! Good ol' Telescum.

Sigh, I only sync to 20/10 according to the Telecom website, and even after attempting a few syncs that appears to be true.

Oh well, as long as I don't lag in video games that's all I care about tbh

We're right on the edge of vdsl coverage and sync at 19/7. It does the job though.

It's the upload boost that I find very useful, I can file share and play online games without skipping a beat, not possible on regular DSL with 2x people playing and a handful of data transfers.

But yeah being able to download at 3.8mb/s is also kinda nice I ain't gonna lie :)
