All you need to know about materia melding and spiritbonding

Melding could be a lot of fun, either to achieve the ability to craft new items or maxing out a specific attribute.


Meld success rate
A lot of people know that some gear came with material slot.
What they didn't know is that for each meldable gear you can meld a maximum of 5 materia on it even if it has 1 slot.
The slot basically means that you have a 100% success rate on that meld.  Additional meld is called Overmeld.


Melding Success Rate Chart:
1st Overmeld: 45% (I), and... I didn't bother to check the rest.
2nd Overmeld: 24% (I), 22% (II), 19% (III), 16% (IV)
3rd Overmeld: 14% (I), 13% (II), 11% (III), 10% (IV)
4th Overmeld: 8% (I), 8% (II), 7% (III), 6% (IV)


How much attribute can be increased?
For this you'll have to experiment or you can look for internet resources that provide you with a chart.

The Ariyala site is pretty useful, it shows the caps in gray beside each attribute

Marvelously Mutable Materia
This allow you to trade 5 materia for 1 random materia, the returned materia is at the average tier.
For example trading in 5 tier 4 materia will return a tier 4 and trading 4 tier 4 and 1 tier 1 you'll have 20% of getting a tier 1 back.


Remove Meld
You can remove materia from an item with the same goblin involve in the above quest but you must remove all materia at once.

Tier 1: iLv 1-29
Tier 2: iLv 30-44
Tier 3: iLv 45-50
Tier 4: iLv 55+


When you convert an item with ilvl 55+ you'll most likely get a Tier 3 materia.   However you have a small percentage of getting a Tier 4 materia.



I've found a new way to get crafting and gathering materia.  This is a simplified version but requires more time for spirit bonding gathering materia since you can only equip one earrings.  But this make it a lot easier to make since they both share the same ingredient. 


For Tier 1 materia the crafting material is already inside the company house vender.  For Tier 1 and Tier 2 materia you'll have your spirit bond close to 80% in 1 expert or high level roulette.
